Pune: The Pune Rural police nabbed a 45-year-old woman from Wardha within an hour after she allegedly stole a purse containing gold jewellery worth Rs 2.66 lakh of another woman at Narayangaon state transport bus stand on Tuesday afternoon.
The 59-year-old victim reported the theft with the Narayangaon police and a team swung into action. Sub-inspector Somshekhar Shete of the Narayangaon police said the woman is a housewife and her husband is a carpenter. Recently, he underwent bypass surgery in a hospital in the Pimpri Chinchwad area. "On Tuesday afternoon, the woman's husband had a doctor's appointment in Pune and both of them came to the Narayangaon bus stand to catch an MSRTC bus," Shete said.
He said to prevent theft on the bus, the victim removed her gold chain and ring and kept them in a small purse, which she then placed in her handbag. "Around 2pm, while boarding the bus, the woman sensed someone's hand in her handbag. She was, however, unable to do anything because of the crowd. After entering the bus, she checked her handbag and found that her purse that had jewellery was missing," Shete said.
The officer said the woman and her husband immediately deboarded the bus and alerted the policemen on duty at the bus stop. "Our team checked the CCTV footage from the bus stand and found a woman who was constantly following the victim. The woman was behind her until the victim entered the bus. We also found that the woman then boarded a bus towards Nashik," he said.
Shete mentioned that suspecting the woman behind the theft, the police team decided to chase the Nashik-bound bus. "We located the bus immediately and stopped it near Ale Phata. The suspected woman was inside the bus. Our woman police constable frisked her and recovered the stolen jewellery from her," Shete said.
He said the accused has been charged under section 303 (2) (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). "We are investigating whether the woman has any previous criminal record," Shete said.
